How to Choose an Outdoor Chair for Australian Sun, Salt and Rain

A practical Australian checklist for outdoor chairs: measure the site, verify material and finish, test drainage, care, access and storage.

2. Measure the chair in use, not as an outline

Write down the table height, the underside clearance and the distance between its legs. Then allow for the chair occupied and pulled back, not merely tucked in. On a narrow balcony, mark the circulation route to the door, barbecue or garden. In a compact room, a few centimetres of arm projection or rear-leg splay can determine whether a second person can pass.

Measure delivery access at the same time: doorway, corridor turn, stair, lift and any balcony threshold. Does the floor drain away from the legs? Can a cover trap condensation against the finish? A smooth visual form can still conceal a poor drainage path.
