Zanotta, still arguing

A house built on Sacco and Mezzadro could have settled comfortably into its archive. Zanotta didn't. Alongside the icons it keeps commissioning new work from designers who share the founder's conviction that furniture is worth thinking hard about.

That is a harder path than trading on heritage. It means risking new objects next to famous ones, and trusting that the same values — proportion, material, idea — will carry across generations.

A new generation, same appetite

Damian Williamson's roll-armed William, Calvi Brambilla's Bumper, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance's organic Calla and Derby, the in-house Emaf Progetti — these are not pastiche. They carry the same care for proportion, material and idea that made the 1960s pieces matter.

The archive is the argument — not the last word.

What they are not is a stylistic copy of the past. A contemporary Zanotta looks of its moment; it simply holds itself to the standard the archive set, which is a very different thing from imitating the archive.

The archive as a brief

The best way to understand a house like this is to see the archive not as a catalogue but as a brief. Every new commission is implicitly asked the same question the Castiglionis and Gattis were asked: is this idea worth manufacturing faithfully for the next fifty years?

Pieces that can answer yes earn their place beside the icons. The ones that can't never get made. That editorial discipline is why the collection stays coherent rather than merely large.

Present tense

It is what keeps a seventy-year-old house feeling present: a collection that argues with itself, generation to generation, and is the better for it.

For a buyer today that means something practical — a Zanotta room need not be a period room. The new work and the icons are designed to the same conviction, and they live together as easily as they were made.
