Near the Australian coast, the material question comes down to one thing: how the surface handles salt. Why salt air is harder on furniture than rain

Inland, without that washing effect, the same rainfall does comparatively more harm to unprotected metal. It's a useful reminder that "near the beach" describes a gradient, not a single hazard line — the furniture worst affected is usually whatever sits closest to open salt spray with the least air movement to dry it out.
The chair built to survive salt water — and a torpedo blast

The same logic, built from reclaimed plastic and wood
Emeco's Broom Stacking Chair, designed by Philippe Starck and launched in 2012, applies the same outdoor-first thinking to a different material. It's made from roughly 75 percent reclaimed polypropylene and 15 percent reclaimed wood fibre — waste swept from lumber yards and plastics plants — compressed into a wood-composite shell with a small amount of glass fibre for rigidity, then coloured through rather than painted. Starck described the idea plainly: a "humble guy who takes a humble broom" turning factory waste into a usable object. Like the 1006, Broom is listed by Emeco as outdoor-approved, needs nothing more than soapy water to clean, and stacks — practical for a deck, balcony or verandah where furniture gets moved in and out with the weather.



Where timber still belongs near the coast
None of this rules solid timber out of a coastal home — it rules out treating every position in the house the same way. A dining table or bench kept back from unshaded, spray-exposed positions, ideally under a verandah roof or behind a windbreak, is a different proposition to the same piece left on an open deck facing the surf. The detail that actually fails first is rarely the timber itself: it's the metal fixings, hinges and screws holding it together, which sit inside the same corrosion-risk band as any other unprotected metal near the coast and are worth checking more often than an inland owner would think to.
