Solid Wood Dining Table Buying Guide: Species, Joinery, Movement

What to check before buying a solid oak dining table: species, joinery that allows for wood movement, and finishes suited to an Australian home.

A solid wood dining table is worth checking on three things before you buy it: the species and whether its origin is actually verified, the joinery — specifically whether the top is built to move with the seasons or fixed against it — and the finish, since an oiled surface can be repaired at home while a lacquered one generally can't. Get those right and the table outlasts several houses; get them wrong and you inherit a crack.

Species: oak is the safe choice, but "FSC-certified" is the part that matters

Oak dominates solid-wood dining tables for good reason: it's hard enough to resist dents from cutlery and daily use, machines and finishes predictably, and has an open, legible grain that shows its own construction rather than hiding behind veneer. But "oak" on a spec sheet tells you the species, not where it came from. Joinery: two honest ways to build the base

How the legs meet the top says more about a table's engineering than its finish does. Form & Refine's Trefoil Round Table, designed by Jonas Herman of Herman Studio, uses a centred column of four oak legs standing close together, with deliberate gaps left between the segments — Herman has described the aim as "an interesting shadow effect where three identical legs meet each other," a construction chosen to combine legroom for diners with visual lightness. FRAMA takes the opposite route with its Farmhouse Trestle Table: two solid oak trestles carry a plank tabletop, hardwax-oiled and flat-packed for delivery — a farmhouse-joinery logic, built in Lithuania, that reads as architecture rather than cabinetry. Neither approach hides its own logic; that's the test worth applying to any table before it hides under a tablecloth.

Movement: why a solid top needs room to breathe

Solid wood keeps moving after it leaves the workshop, because it keeps exchanging moisture with the air around it. The Wood Database records white oak's tangential shrinkage at 10.5% against a radial shrinkage of 5.6% — a T/R ratio of 1.9, meaning a flat-sawn board moves nearly twice as much across the grain as along it. Indoors, that translates to a real but modest seasonal swing, not the 6–8% range wood experiences fully exposed outdoors. A table built to absorb that — a top left free to expand rather than glued rigidly across its width at every point — takes the movement in its stride. One glued flat across the grain in both directions eventually splits, because the wood has nowhere else to go.

What this means in an Australian home

Australian indoor humidity swings less violently than a heated European winter against an un-heated summer, but coastal humidity and inland dryness still pull a tabletop in opposite directions through the year. A small, even gap opening along a plank joint in July and closing again by January is the timber doing exactly what solid oak does — not a defect. What does matter is keeping the table clear of direct air-conditioning or heater vents, which dry one section of the top faster than the rest and invite uneven movement, and re-oiling on the schedule the maker specifies rather than waiting for the surface to look thirsty.

Three questions

What should I check before buying a solid wood dining table? Three things, in order: the species and whether it's FSC-certified (so the timber's origin is actually traceable, not just named), the joinery method (whether the top is built to allow the wood to move, or fixed rigidly across the grain), and the finish (an oil finish can be refreshed at home; a lacquer generally can't). Get those three right and the table should outlast the house it's bought for.

Does a solid wood dining table crack or develop gaps over time? Small seasonal gaps are normal and not a fault. Oak's tangential shrinkage is roughly twice its radial shrinkage, so a flat-sawn top will widen and narrow slightly as indoor humidity shifts through the year. Furniture built to accommodate that — a trestle base the top isn't glued flat across, or panels left free to expand — absorbs the movement instead of splitting.

It means the timber's path from a responsibly managed forest to the finished piece has been independently audited at every step, under Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody rules.
