Blueprint Chair: How a Steam-Bent Back Changes Solid-Oak Comfort

The Form & Refine Blueprint Chair's backrest is bent from a single piece of oak. Here's what steam-bending changes about how it feels to sit in.

The Form & Refine Blueprint Chair's backrest is not built from rails and joints — it is a single piece of solid European oak, steam-bent into its curve. That construction is also the source of its comfort: an unbroken length of timber that meets the sitter's back as one continuous surface, instead of a rigid frame with a hard seam where two boards were glued together.

What steam does to a plank of oak

Wood resists bending because lignin, the natural polymer that binds its cellulose fibres together, holds the grain rigid. Steam heats and moistens the timber until that lignin softens, and for a short window the wood can be curved around a mould without cracking; a steel strap is typically clamped along the outer face of the bend to keep the fibres in compression rather than letting them tear apart in tension. The technique is old — Thonet built its 19th-century bentwood chairs on it, curving solid beech into unbroken loops that no saw-and-joint method could match. Form & Refine applies the same principle to the Blueprint Chair, but to a different end: not a decorative loop, but a backrest that keeps one length of grain from seat to headrail, with no glued seam sitting against the spine.

A seat shaped to the body, not the eye

Underneath that backrest is a moulded veneer seat that Form & Refine describes as shaped around the human body, built specifically to support posture rather than to look sculptural. It's a second, separate comfort decision from the backrest: where the steam-bent oak gives slightly under weight and pressure, the seat's curve is fixed and anatomical, doing the work a padded cushion would otherwise do. Together they let the chair stay thin — legs and backrest in solid timber, seat in thin moulded veneer — without reading as spartan. Designer Jonas Herman, of Herman Studio, has described the aim as balancing something "refined and robust at the same time," and the split between a flexing back and a shaped seat is where that balance actually sits.

Built to a number, not just a look

The dining chair stands 76.5 cm overall, 49 cm wide and 48.5 cm deep, with a 45 cm seat height, and weighs 5.1 kg — light enough that the backrest's flex doesn't come at the cost of a heavy frame. It's built from FSC-certified solid European oak, finished in natural oil rather than lacquer (Form & Refine also offers white-oiled and black-stained versions), and tested to the EN 16139 furniture standard, with a five-year warranty. Manufacturing happens in Bosnia and Herzegovina — consistent with the house's stated preference, set out by founders Helle Herman Mortensen, Jonas Herman Pedersen and Lasse Lund Lauridsen since 2018, for working with craftspeople close to where the material itself originates.

One chair, two heights

Form & Refine builds the same logic into the Blueprint Bar Chair 65 rather than designing a separate stool. It shares the identical steam-bent oak backrest and moulded veneer seat, so the sitting comfort carries over unchanged; only the leg length grows, taking the seat to 65 cm and the overall height to 97 cm, at a net weight of 7 kg. A kitchen island and a dining table can run the same chair language, in the same finish, without the bar stool feeling like a different, lesser design.

Three questions

Why does Form & Refine steam-bend the Blueprint Chair's backrest instead of joining separate rails? Steam softens the lignin holding the oak's fibres together, so a single length of solid wood can be curved around a mould without cutting or laminating it. The backrest keeps one continuous run of grain with no glued seam sitting against the sitter's back — Form & Refine's own account credits designer Jonas Herman with wanting a line that reads as one continuous stroke rather than a frame built up from parts.

Is the Blueprint Chair actually comfortable, or just minimal-looking? What's the comfort difference between the Blueprint Chair and the Blueprint Bar Chair 65? Construction is identical — the same steam-bent oak backrest and the same moulded veneer seat — so the sitting experience carries over.
